Sliding Viewport for Interactive Virtual Environments

چکیده
The ability to manipulate objects is fundamental to most virtual reality (VR) applications. A multitude of metaphors have been developed to facilitate object selection and manipulation [1], including virtual hand [2], which remains by far the most popular technique in this category. The utility of the virtual hand depends on the user’s ability to see it. Unfortunately, ensuring this is not always easy, especially in immersive systems which employ head mounted displays (HMD) with a limited field of view. Building on [3], we show how the virtual hand metaphor may be used effectively both to manipulate virtual objects, and to guide the user’s view in order to ensure continuous visibility of the hand. We provide implementation detail and report experimental results from the user studies. This paper is intended for an audience interested in building HMD-based VR systems, where users are required to actively interact with the environment by using their virtual hand.

Novel Interactive Techniques for Bimanual Manipulation of 3D Objects with Two 3DoF Haptic Interfaces
This paper presents a set of novel interactive techniques adapted to two-handed manipulation of objects with dual 3DoF singlepoint haptic devices. We first propose the double bubble for bimanual haptic exploration of virtual environments through hybrid position/rate controls, and a bimanual viewport adaptation method that keeps both proxies on screen in large environments. We also present two b...

متن کاملAn Interactive Graphics Display Architecture
In recent times Virtual Reality has become a growing area within computer graphics with many and varied applications. Many systems suffer from inadequate performance resulting in a lack of realism and even psychological side effects[1]. A large body of research exists to improve the performance of Virtual Reality systems by increasing the rate at which scenes are drawn. This project differs in ...
متن کاملViewport-aware adaptive 360° video streaming using tiles for virtual reality
360° video is attracting an increasing amount of attention in the context of Virtual Reality (VR). Owing to its very high-resolution requirements, existing professional streaming services for 360° video suffer from severe drawbacks. This paper introduces a novel end-to-end streaming system from encoding to displaying, to transmit 8K resolution 360° video and to provide an enhanced VR experience...
متن کاملInteracting with 3d and 2d Mobile Maps: an Exploratory Study
To study how users of mobile maps construct the referential relationship between points in the virtual space and in the surrounding physical space, a semi-natural field study was conducted in a built city environment, utilizing a photorealistic interactive map displayed on a PDA screen. The subjects (N=8) were shown a target (building) in the physical or in the virtual space and asked to point ...
